- (c. 1621–82)Saint and Martyr. The son of a village priest, Avvakum became known to the Russian imperial family and he served as Archpriest of Our Lady of Kazan in Moscow. However, he came into conflict with Patriarch nikon in the matter of liturgical reforms and quickly became regarded as the champion of the Old Believers, the group which remained faithful to the old traditions. He was exiled in Siberia in 1653, returned to Moscow in 1664 and was exiled again. In 1666 he was excommunicated and, while his followers were cruelly persecuted, he was imprisoned. He continued to campaign against the reforms and in 1682 Czar Theodore sentenced him to be burnt at the stake. Avvakum is regarded as a saint by the surviving Old Believers and his autobiography is a classic of Russian literature.Avvakum, The Life of Archpriest Avvakum (1963).
